Fifty years of the breakbeat

Fifty years after the first break lit up a Bronx park, Harbor Bay threw it a birthday party on the pier. Twelve DJs, two soundsystems and one very patient generator carried an all-day open-decks celebration from noon until the harbor police — politely, almost regretfully — asked us to turn it down.

The format was simple: thirty minutes each, breaks only, judged by dancing. Teenagers who had never touched vinyl queued behind veterans who cut their teeth on the original pressings, and the handover between generations was the day's best moment.

The closing history set

Kathrina Glass closed with an hour tracing the break from funk 45s through golden-age loops to the harbor's own productions. Halfway through, she stopped the music to read the names of five local pioneers — and the pier answered with the loudest cheer of the day.

Plans for next year are already afloat: same pier, bigger generator, and a youth heat so the next fifty years start early.
